While
some of the mechanisms of action of HBOT are yet to be discovered, it is known
that HBOT enables the following physiologic events.
-
Greatly
increases oxygen concentration in all body tissues, even with reduced or
blocked blood flow.
-
Stimulates the growth of new blood vessels to locations
with reduced circulation, improving blood flow.
- Causes
a rebound arterial dilation after HBOT, resulting in an increased blood
vessel diameter, again improving blood flow.
- Stimulates
an adaptive increase in the body's synthesis of superoxide dismutase (SOD),
an anti-oxidant and free-radical scavenger.
-
Aids wound healing by enhancing white blood cell action.
- Causes
direct toxicity to anaerobic bacteria.
