HBOT has been used on an experimental basis to treat seizure disorder unresponsive to medications.

On the one hand, the hypermetabolic state induced by HBOT may lower seizure threshold therefore increasing frequency of seizures.

However, in our experience, seizure frequency and severity has been decreased by use of the chamber. There has also been a Chinese research study of 100 pediatric epileptic patients treated with HBOT.

76 children showed a decrease in seizure frequency or complete resolution.

This study was presented at the 11th International Congress on Hyperbaric Medicine. The study postulated that the HBOT could improve the recovery of epileptic foci, decrease brain swelling due to seizures, and deliver oxygen to compromised areas of brain tissue.

This effects to decrease impairment in cognition and abnormal personality.
